Falls City Beer & Kentucky Science Center IPA

Project Overview: Created by sculptor Louis Paul Jonas on behalf of Sinclair Oil for the 1964 New York World’s Fair, the triceratops was originally part of a set of nine fiberglass dinosaur figures. At the conclusion of the World’s Fair, the dinosaurs went on tour before being split up to various museums around the country. Our triceratops found a home here in Louisville, appearing at several locations around town before becoming a permanent part of Kentucky Science Center in 1979. In 2022, Kentucky Science Center was thrilled to receive the funds to restore the triceratops and bring it back downtown to its Science Center home. To celebrate Lottie’s return — Kentucky Science Center collaborated with Falls City Beer to create a unique IPA - a tricera-HOPS.

The First Draft: My first instinct when I heard Dinosaur Beer was a very green color palette and a very natural dinosaur environment — the jungle. The longer I worked with this direction the more “unfit” it felt. Lottie’s environment is not the jungle, her environment is downtown Louisville. This sparked the direction for what would become the final product.

The Second Draft: With the addition of the Louisville skyline — a more blue toned color palette made more sense. This draft also included updated typography to feel more “vintage” to reflect Lottie’s history. From the beginning, I imagined Lottie walking around the can. This idea, while fun, the alignment at the seam of the label would become an issue. It was also at this point we learned the name of the beer would change to “Lottie's Tricera-HOPS” and would be flavored with tangerine.
